Prem Watsa, chairman of Fairfax Holdings, an Indian who went overseas at a young age to make a big name for himself. Today he is celebrated as the Warren Buffett of Canada or the Oracle of Ontario, as he goes about investing billions of dollars in businesses across the globe.
Watsa, the third of four children, was born in Hyderabad in 1950. When he joined the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Watsa, prodded by his father, took chemical engineering as his main subject.
In his media interactions, he has often recounted his initial struggle in Canada as a salesman, which helped hone his perseverance and diligence. “As an immigrant, you work that much harder, because you’re at the bottom and the only way to go is up,” he once said.
His ventures, investment philosophy and bullish outlook on India were all key factors that weighed in his favour. Watsa was a clear winner because of his performance and high profile.
